Upcoming Teacher PD

Teaching Digital Technologies Creatively - Free Teacher PD

Friday 10th July

Three (3) Workshops in One (1) Day

Banyule Nillumbik Tech School is pleased to offer a free day long PD for teachers of Digital Technologies during the upcoming school holidays.

Specifically intended to support teachers who may be new to the subject or looking at more creative ways of delivering content, this program will consist of three separate hands-on workshops providing teachers with units of work they can take straight back to their classroom.

This workshop will run on Friday, July 10th, in the second week of the school holidays, from 9:00am to 3:00pm.

Workshop 1 | Binary Snack Bar (90 minutes)

Participants will learn of the ins and outs of how binary numbers work and then explore binary numbers through an interactive snack bar where every item is priced in binary. Using Caesar cipher clues and binary decoding challenges, participants work collaboratively to uncover hidden messages, decipher costs, and purchase snacks. The workshop combines cryptography, problem-solving, hands-on learning (and snacks) to make digital concepts engaging and memorable.

Workshop 2 | Create your own wearable movement tracker with Micro:bits (90 minutes)

In this session, you’ll build confidence using microcontrollers through a hands-on physical computing experience that takes you step-by-step from the basics of coding to controlling movement in the real world. You’ll see how simple programs can translate into tangible engineering outcomes, and how students can quickly engage with core ideas like input, output, and control systems without needing advanced technical knowledge. By the end, you’ll have a complete, ready-to-teach lesson that you can take back to your classroom, along with the confidence to adapt it across year levels; whether you’re focusing on early design exploration or more complex engineering and systems thinking.

Workshop 3 | Creating a Green Screen News Program (120 minutes)

This session helps deconstruct the wording of the Victorian Curriculum 2.0 and will focus on the creation of an original news program. Utilising a green screen, teleprompter, Adobe Premiere and Adobe Illustrator, participants will read the news and create their own news story, make broadcast graphics and tickers and edit it all together in Adobe Premiere.

Numbers are limited for this free and exciting day long PD, so registrations are vital. Please fill out the following registration form to confirm your attendance:

Teaching Digital Technologies Creatively - Free Teacher PD

Ongoing Teacher PD

Teacher PD sessions at Banyule Nillumbik Tech School are completely free and will run every second Monday of each term from 4 -6pm. Each session will have a particular topic, tool or technology area of focus. Teachers are welcome to attend every session and learn that week’s focus area, but are also welcome to come every fortnight, and continue working independently on their own projects, think Teacher Makerspace. We welcome teachers to use our technologies and resources during this time to work in their areas of interest, provided they receive the training on the equipment they use first.

There is no obligation to attend every session, but of course, they are certainly welcome to do so. Topics will be emailed out each Term.

Broaden your skills base by engaging in meaningful learning led by our Ashley Hall, Learning Technologist. Leverage our skills knowledge and experience to enhance your confidence and student outcomes.
